Ms. Bauman from McKinley Elementary School organized an absolutely amazing experience for all the fifth-grade students at her school! Her class is reading the novel "My Side of the Mountain" by Jean George. This book tells the story of a young boy who runs away from home to live alone in the woods. He eventually finds a Peregrine Falcon and raises it to be his hunting partner.
.
Ms. Bauman invited professional falconers to demonstrate the fascinating hunting skills and beauty of the Peregrine Falcon and the Red-Tailed Hawk. They both differ in strengths and act as a sharp eye when hunting for small game. The students showed great interest in the display and asked many insightful questions about the practice of raising falcons. It was amazing to see the real-world connections being made to the book that the students read in class. Talk about soaring to excellence!

Ms. Hawkins' first-grade class at Ladera del Norte Elementary harvested some of their crispy, crunchy lettuce leaves this week! Ms. Hawkins' students practiced their skills in determining which leaves were suitable for their schoolmates' lunches and which ones "went to the chickens"!
.
The harvested leaves were then given to the cafeteria to make a wonderful side salad option for the students to select at lunch! They even came with some edible purple flowers on top to really elevate the dish. The students in Ms. Hawkins' class were so thrilled to see their hard work displayed and enjoyed the fruits of their labor! It's crucial for students to see where their food is coming from and we hope that indoor gardens continue to grow throughout the district! Fabulous job, Hornets!

This week FMS Native American Programs hosted a Book Talk featuring, "The Yazzie Case: Building a Public Education System for Our Indigenous Future". It was a truly insightful workshop centered around discussing the novel's main idea of advocating for Native American students in their educational success.
.
Several contributors to the novel were present and discussed their chapters in greater detail. They covered everything from foundational understanding of legal terms, to examples of students that may be in need of more assistance to excel in their academic career. This workshop facilitated a deeper understanding of the significance that this collaborative piece offers, as well as the next steps needed in order to achieve this goal to it's full potential.
.
We strongly encourage you to read this novel, as it provides essential comprehension about the barriers that these students face. It is also offers encouragement on how to become a better support for our students. Thank you to everyone that attended, and special thank you to our guests for presenting this vital information!
