To celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the New Mexico History Museum will screen seven documentaries made by students from Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Sandia Park, and Farmington. The films will play throughout the month of July in the museum’s auditorium in Santa Fe.
Four FMS students earned a spot in this prestigious showcase: Alina Bonilla and Addysen Martinez of Heights, Elysa Heil of Piedra Vista, and Stevie Stone of Mesa View. Each will have the honor of presenting their documentary in person at the museum and sharing the story behind their work. See the full list of students and films below.
We are especially proud to spotlight Stevie Stone, whose documentary “Title IX and How It Impacted Women in Sports” is one of the seven films selected for the museum’s celebration of the United States Semiquincentennial. This is a remarkable accomplishment.
Signed into law in 1972, Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in any educational program or activity receiving federal funding, a landmark protection that transformed opportunities for women and girls in scholastic and collegiate athletics. Before its passage, female athletes had little institutional support, limited scholarship access, and far fewer competitive programs.
Stevie conducted extensive research and interviewed retired Boys and Girls Wrestling Coach and New Mexico Sports Hall of Famer Herb Stinson to craft a compelling, insightful documentary capturing Title IX's lasting impact on women in sports with a meaningful local angle.
You can view Stevie’s documentary here.
Congratulations to Alina, Addysen, Elysa, and Stevie! Your outstanding work has earned well-deserved recognition on a truly extraordinary stage.
