A 5-Week Navajo Cuisine Journey at Animas Elementary

At Animas Elementary School, our students are embarking on an exciting five-week journey to learn how to prepare a complete Navajo meal, including an entrée, main course, dessert, and refreshing drink. With guidance from Ms. Rhoda Adeky and our dedicated Student Nutrition staff, Peggy Bolen and JoJo Reed, the program features 10 engaging activities designed to teach not only cooking skills but also teamwork, safety, cleanliness, organization, and how to follow instructions.

This week, before our Mustangs tackle making tortillas, they are learning essential kitchen safety, such as how to safely work around a stove before and after cooking. In these photos, you can see them making Navajo Tea with Strawberries—such a delicious and fun experience!

We are truly enjoying The Modern Navajo Kitchen cookbook by Alana Yazzie (The Fancy Navajo), which celebrates Diné flavors and traditions with homestyle recipes. We’re so excited to see our students build these skills while connecting with cultural traditions!
