The winning words of today's 2026 Concurso de Deletreo en Español, our prestigious Spanish Spelling Bee, were zapatilla (slipper) and báscula (scale). Bluffview's Elier Josias Quezada claimed first place, while Daniel Loya Piñon of Esperanza earned runner-up honors. Elier will now go on to represent Farmington Municipal Schools at the 2026 State Spanish Spelling Bee, to be held at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque on May 2, 2026.
It took 12 rounds to crown this year's champion. As is so often the case in Spanish orthography, accent marks proved to be the greatest challenge, tripping up our spellers in words like gérmenes (germs), jarrón (vase), neumático (tire), and omnívoro (omnivore). These tildes and written accents are not mere decoration; in Spanish, they carry meaning, rhythm, and the full weight of a rich, expressive, and beautiful language.
A heartfelt thank you to our pronunciador, Mr. Raul Marquez, whose clear pronunciation guided every round, and to our juezas Ms. Cristina Acero and Ms. Rebeca Lujan, whose acute listening skills ensured every letter and accent mark was judged with precision and fairness.
¡Felicitaciones, Elier y Daniel! And to Elier, best of luck as you compete at state. ¡Buena suerte!
