12/09/2025: Board of Education Recap

We celebrated Farmington High’s HOSA Team at today’s regular Board of Education meeting, where two educational opportunities for students were approved, and outgoing Board President Keith Corley was also recognized.

FHS HOSA Team

The Farmington High School HOSA team, a health care-focused career and technical student organization, recently competed at the regional competition in Albuquerque. Our students performed exceptionally well, with several earning first-place finishes. Thirteen of the fourteen students qualified for the state competition in April, with some students competing in as many as three events.

The competition included 580 students from 20 schools across the state, including Los Lunas, Albuquerque Academy, Taos, and Cleveland. This is the first year Farmington High has offered a CNA course, and our students placed ahead of many schools that have had dedicated CNA classes for years in our region. We are incredibly proud of our CNA students, particularly since this is the very first year Farmington High School has offered a CNA course. Our students placed ahead of Los Lunas in our region, which is a tremendous accomplishment.

As a team, Farmington High students earned first place in Occupational Therapy. They also placed second and third in Surgical Technology and second in Job Seeking Skills. Additional strong finishes included third in Medical Law and Ethics, fourth in Behavioral Health, and sixth in Clinical Registered Nursing Skills.

“This is the first year students are required to qualify to advance to the state level, which makes it especially meaningful. Most importantly, our goal is to help students build the skills and knowledge they will need for success in the health care field,” said Ms. Terri McCartney, Farmington High School teacher and advisor for SkillsUSA and HOSA Future Health Care Professionals.

“A big focus of HOSA this year is also community service. It allows us to give back to the community in a meaningful way. We work closely with the Lions Club on their KidSight program, helping provide vision screenings for preschool children ages three to five. For many of these children, especially those from lower-income families, this may be their first eye exam,” she continued.

When asked by our Board what their career plans are, the students spoke of big goals for their futures, including becoming nurse practitioners, pediatric oncology nurses, doctors, EMT’s, and pediatric surgeons.

Board Approvals

The Board of Education also approved Farmington High School’s Army JROTC trip to attend the JROTC National VEX Robotics Championship in Sandusky, Ohio. Only 120 teams nationwide were invited to this prestigious event, including Farmington High School, which is currently ranked first in the state of New Mexico. Five students will travel to the competition in January 2026.

In addition, the Board approved Tibbetts Middle School’s trip to the Looking Across the Mountain Conference. Thirty students from the United Moccasins Club, which has 68 members, will attend the conference in February 2026 and help open the event with a special performance.

The Board also approved the winning proposal for furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the new Farmington Preschool Academy. Facilities upgrades were also approved at Farmington High School, including new baseball and softball infield turf, multipurpose field turf, and updated lighting for Hutchinson Stadium. Piedra Vista High School will also receive upgrades, including multipurpose field turf and new baseball and softball infield turf.
