FMS, we want to tell you about an exciting new opportunity for our high school students—an aviation curriculum launching this upcoming school year in partnership with local experts, organizations, and the Four Corners Regional Airport.
Starting this upcoming academic year, Piedra Vista students can enroll in Introduction to Aviation, a hands-on course that explores the fundamentals of flight, aircraft systems, weather patterns, navigation, and the broader aviation industry. This course is designed to spark interest in high-demand careers such as piloting, air traffic control, and aircraft maintenance.
A key highlight of the program is the Gleim Flight Experience Simulator, generously provided at no cost by the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Aviation Division. This state-of-the-art simulator gives students a realistic flight experience, allowing them to virtually pilot an aircraft in different weather conditions and environments.
Last week, our Director of College & Career Readiness, Mr. Milo McMinn, met with Michael Lewis, Airport Manager at Four Corners Regional Airport; Professor Matthew Bell from the SJC School of Math, Science, and Engineering; and local pilots and flight instructors Russell Gervase (Community Aerosports) and Emily Kloster (Flight 4 Corners). Together, they’re helping to shape a course that introduces students to aviation language, technology, and career pathways.
The course will be taught by Mr. Kris Hughes, our current Engineering and Science teacher, who has also received specialized aviation training at AOAP in Phoenix.
We’re incredibly excited to offer this unique opportunity. Beyond the classroom, students could benefit from mentorship, guest speakers, internships, and potential flight training experiences after high school.
Thank you for your continued support as we help our students reach for the skies—literally!
