Celebrating Navajo Nation Sovereignty Day at Tibbetts Middle School

Today at Tibbetts Middle School, we had the honor of celebrating Navajo Nation Sovereignty Day with a special and inspirational visit from Miss Navajo Nation, Ranisha Begay.

Ms. Begay shared her heartfelt reflections with our students, saying, "I’m truly grateful to be here on Sovereignty Day. Across the Navajo Nation, we celebrate this day because our people endured many struggles, but we have persevered and come so far."

As she introduced herself in Diné, beginning with her clans, Ms. Begay explained, "I tell you my clans because I was taught that wherever you go, you represent your mother and father. Before you were even born—when you were still in your mother's womb—your parents were already known. I carry with me the importance of who I am and who my relatives are. That’s how we connect with one another. I want to encourage you to be proud that you come from a long line of strong ancestors."

Ms. Begay also spoke about the importance of education, sharing her journey from Rock Point High School to South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Arizona, and eventually to Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. She emphasized that education has been a powerful tool in broadening her opportunities and strengthening her voice as a leader.

Her visit was made possible through an invitation from the Unified Moccasins & Diné Club. During the assembly, club members also performed the traditional Sash Belt and Ribbon dances for the entire school community.

We are deeply grateful to Ms. Begay for sharing her wisdom, stories, and songs with our students. Ahéhee’, Ms. Begay!

Huge thank you to Native American Programs, and our Navajo Bilingual Ms. Cheryl Willie, and our Native American Youth Advisor Ms. Rochelle Curry for organizing this wonderful event.
