Close Competition and Big Wins at Regional Science Olympiad

Close Competition and Big Wins at Regional Science Olympiad

Only four points separated the top four teams in the middle school division at the Northwest New Mexico Science Olympiad, showing just how close and competitive this year’s event truly was.

The Regional Event was held on today at Farmington High School and brought together outstanding teams from Navajo Prep, Central Schools, and Farmington Municipal Schools. Students put their skills to the test in a wide variety of hands-on and academic events, including Astronomy, Bungee Drop, Potions and Poisons, Code, Crime Buster, Electric Vehicle, Hovercraft, Water Quality, Write It Do It, and many more, for a total of 34 different categories. The level of creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving on display was inspiring to see.

We would like to congratulate every student who participated, as well as a huge thank you to the dedicated coaches who spent countless hours preparing their teams. We are also deeply grateful to the event supervisors and volunteers from our school districts, our Tournament Director, Dr. Kelly Stone, and our Score Master, Lisa Felix. This event would not be possible without their time, expertise, and commitment to student success.

Congratulations to Hermosa Middle School for earning first place in the Middle School Division, and to Farmington High School for winning the High School Division. This marks an impressive fourth consecutive year that Farmington High has taken the top high school honor.

Streamlining the Tournament Experience Through Smart Technology

We are also excited to highlight an innovative addition to this year’s tournament. Taylor Gutierrez, Cody Johnston, and Jay Garcia from OlympiScan, working in collaboration with New Mexico Tech, are expanding their Tournament Management Platform to help school districts like Farmington Municipal Schools run competitions more efficiently. This year, students wore wristbands that were scanned as they entered events, making check-in faster and more accurate. This system also improved event tracking, team rostering for coaches, and scoring, creating a better experience for everyone involved.

Celebrating Community Support and School Pride in Style

A special shoutout goes to the FMS Enrichment Office for providing the sharp lab coats worn by FMS teams during the competition. Farmington High, Mesa View, San Juan College High, and Piedra Vista proudly wore lab coats in their school colors and looked fantastic. Hermosa Middle School also wore lab coats, having already received theirs last year.

We would also like to thank Jaime and Lindsay Morales from 8Ten15 for their generous donation of the vinyl printing on the lab coats. Their support helped our students look professional and confident as they represented their schools.
