Concurso de Deletreo en Español en FMS

¡Ha sido un placer ver a nuestros estudiantes demostrar cuanto han estudiado y lo seguros de sí mismos que se mostraron durante nuestro Concurso de Deletreo en Español!

The winning word on this year’s FMS Spanish Spelling Bee was “futurólogo,” which means “futurist,” a person who studies the future and makes predictions about it based on current trends.

Our champion is Nataniel Condor, a 7th grader from Tibbetts Middle School (Top photo, left). She clinched victory in the fourth round of the elimination portion, facing off against Kiara Rodriguez, an 8th grader also from Tibbetts.

After taking a break last year, our Spanish Spelling Bee is back! It is a cherished tradition here at Farmington Municipal Schools and now in its 20th year.

We had eighteen talented participants from Esperanza, McCormick, Country Club, Hermosa, Heights, and Tibbetts on this edition, which took place on March 21, at FMS’ Central Office.

The competition got intense as words tripped up contestants over three rounds. They tackled tricky words like “obtuso,” “alfiler,” and “paredón.”

Then came the elimination rounds where our finalists had to spell a word correctly and then their opponent's word. If they stumbled, a new word was drawn.

As expected, the elimination rounds featured even tougher words like “Bienaventurado,” “Científico,” “Léxico,” “Utopía,” and “Aterrizaje,” keeping our finalists on their toes.

This event offers the opportunity for all Spanish-speaking students in Farmington Municipal Schools to demonstrate their mastery of spelling in Spanish. In addition to spelling, diacritical marks pose a challenge for students.

Students from 4th to 8th grade participated in this year’s edition, aligning with the New Mexico Spanish Spelling Bee grades. Our Multicultural Department will support our winners with some costs for the state competition happening on April 27, 2024, in Albuquerque.

Congratulations to all our participants: Perla, Yaretzi, Kassandra, Mia, Kenneth, Emily, Ashley, Alan, Alex, Jefferson, Itchel, Sophia, Lizeth, Jeyson, and Bryan!

Congratulations to our winners, both students in Ms. Eliana Tucker’s Spanish/Bilingual Class at Tibbetts! Kudos to Ms. Tucker and our Spanish educators!

Ms. Tucker has been part of Farmington Municipal Schools since 2013, starting as an educational aide and becoming a teacher in 2015 at Ladera del Norte Elementary and Tibbetts Middle School.
