Exciting Updates to Middle School Electives at FMS

FMS, we’re looking forward to showing our students how FMS is reimagining middle school elective offerings. To better support student interests and align with career pathways offered at the high school level, our new approach is designed to make electives more engaging, relevant, and connected to real-world opportunities.

Starting this school year, students will have access to 5 new elective pathways that align directly with programs at our high schools. These include:

  • Skilled Trades (Welding, Automotive, Construction)

  • Culinary Arts

  • Textiles and Design

  • Public Service Careers

  • Personal and Career Success

For example, our current Woodworking course is being expanded into a full Skilled Trades Shop, incorporating elements of Welding, Construction Trades, and Automotive. Students will also get to use Z Space 3D AR Monitors, providing a hands-on, immersive learning experience that’s both fun and safe.

In Culinary Arts, students will learn not only kitchen skills but also industry knowledge that helps them understand career possibilities, choose relevant high school courses, and build important life skills like communication and teamwork.

Our ultimate goal is to spark student curiosity, build foundational skills, and help them start thinking about their futures—whether that’s in law enforcement, design, construction, or any other field—before they reach the 9th grade.

We’re excited to offer these new opportunities and can’t wait to see how our students grow through them! More to come.
