Keeping Our Students Safe: Emergency Reunification Plan Update

As we prepare for the upcoming school year, our FMS Safety Team met today with key departments to review and improve our emergency reunification procedures, which is the process we follow to safely reunite students with families in the event of a school-wide emergency.

Today’s review included planning for first aid stations, counseling support, and how to adjust our response based on the specific needs of each school. We carefully reviewed parking areas, signage, handicap access, and other logistical details to make the process smooth and accessible for all families.

Teams from Transportation, Student Nutrition, Exceptional Programs, Curriculum and Instruction, Technology, Plant Ops, and Communications worked together to make sure every step of the plan is clear and coordinated. We want to ensure that families know what to expect, where to go, and when to take action should an emergency occur.

While these procedures are not new to FMS, we continue to review and improve them, especially following the 2023 evacuation at one of our elementary schools. We’re committed to closing any gaps and making sure every aspect of the plan works well, no matter the size of the school or the situation.

How We’ll Keep You Informed

In an emergency, we will send updates through phone calls, emails, and social media at the same time. We will also coordinate closely with local fire and police departments, as well as the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management and Dispatch Center so that everyone involved is on the same page and working to get students back to their families as smoothly as possible.
