FMS Standards-Referenced Grading

We are excited to continue partnering with families and working hard to provide you with information about your student's progress in learning.  All Farmington Elementary Schools report on a 0 to 4-point grading scale to communicate your student's knowledge and skills directly related to New Mexico State Standards. Our goal is to provide an accurate and consistent reporting practice across the district. Note that our elementary schools have been using this grading system for some time and we wanted to dive into this approach to help you understand it better.

  • Grading practices in content areas will focus on students' demonstration of their mastery of academic standards. This helps us better understand what students truly know and can do.
  • Student behavior, work ethic, and engagement with others in learning are reported separately as Work Habits.
  • Student progress is reported every 4 weeks, through progress reports and report cards. At any time, families can request a meeting with their student's teacher to learn more about how the student is progressing.

Grading Scale:

Farmington Municipal Schools will use a 0 to 4-point grading scale to communicate what students know and are able to do.

  • 4 ADVANCED: Student demonstrates knowledge that exceeds grade-level standards.
  • 3 PROFICIENT: Student demonstrates mastery of grade-level standards. This is the target/goal for student success and should be celebrated.
  • 2 DEVELOPING: Student demonstrates basic understanding and is partially proficient at meeting grade-level standards.
  • 1 EMERGING: With help, the student demonstrates some understanding of foundational skills and grade-level standards.
  • NO EVIDENCE: Even with help, the student is not successful or no evidence is shown.
