A Big Thank You to Our “Celebrity Crossing Guard of the Day”!

We’re so grateful to Chief Robert Sterrett from the Farmington Fire Department for joining us this morning to help our Animas students safely cross a very busy road. It’s all part of our effort to promote safe driving around schools and celebrate the new school year!

This is the second year we’ve invited local leaders from our amazing community to serve as special crossing guards. Their presence reminds everyone to slow down in school zones and helps give our new and returning students a warm welcome back.

Superintendent Cody Diehl

On Friday, August 8, it was Superintendent Cody Diehl’s time to be our “Celebrity Crossing Guard of the Day.” Mr. Diehl helped students from both Mesa Verde Elementary School and Heights Middle School arrive safely at their respective schools across a high-traffic road.

Ms. Michelle Meyering from Boys & Girls Clubs of San Juan County

Thank you so much to the fabulous Ms. Michelle Meyering from Boys & Girls Clubs of San Juan County for visiting McCormick Elementary School on August 11. Ms. Meyering brought her signature positive energy to both show our community how important it is to be mindful during school zones and to get our students excited for their first full week back!

A huge thank you to Mayor Nate Duckett!

A huge thank you to Mayor Nate Duckett for spending time with us at McKinley Elementary the morning of August 12. He warmly greeted students and families as they arrived, setting a positive tone for another great day of learning.

A big thank you to Ms. Jamie Church!

A big thank you to Ms. Jamie Church, President of the Farmington Chamber of Commerce, for spending the morning with us at Apache Elementary on August 13! She warmly greeted families, guided students safely to their classrooms, and helped make the first day extra special. As we begin the school year, please remember to watch for school zones and drive slowly—our little learners count on us to help keep them safe!

A Big Thank You to Our “Celebrity Crossing Guard of the Day”!

One of our distinguished guests during the 2024 school year was Navajo Nation Vice President Ms. Richelle Montoya, who generously assisted in safely guiding students at Apache Elementary School.

In the first two days of school, 11 citations and warnings were issued in school zones. We sincerely thank the Farmington Police Department and the Farmington Fire Department for their dedication to keeping our students and families safe as the school year begins.

Automatic School Zone Timers

Last summer, Farmington Municipal Schools partnered with the City of Farmington’s Traffic Division to install Automatic School Zone Timers at all elementary schools, including the shared Mesa Verde-Heights and Northeast-Hermosa campuses.

These timers are there to keep our kids safe by lowering speed limits to 15 mph during key times:

  • 20 minutes before breakfast begins

  • 20 minutes after school starts

  • 15 minutes before the end of the school day, and

  • 30 minutes after the end of classes

A Big Thank You to Our “Celebrity Crossing Guard of the Day”!

We’re so excited to kick off another great year. Welcome back, FMS families!
