Griffin Family College Resources

Hello Parents and Families,

We know college courses can bring new challenges, and we want to ensure students and families have the support they need. Below are some helpful resources and answers to frequently asked questions about how students can stay on track and succeed in their college classes.

📘 Help for Students

Connect with College Instructors
The best source of information about a student’s progress in a class is the college instructor. Students are encouraged to meet with their instructors during office hours or by appointment to discuss grades, assignments, and next steps. For the quickest response, students should reach out via the Canvas inbox.

Tutoring at San Juan College
San Juan College offers free tutoring in most subject areas, with both in-person and online options available. If you’re unsure whether a tutor is available for a specific class, reach out to one of the tutoring centers listed on the site. *Please note the SJC Tutoring Center is for college courses only.

SOAR Student Support at SJCHS
SOAR students can visit the student support center for help staying organized, catching up on work, learning effective strategies for success, or setting academic goals. Peer tutors are available by subject and request. The SJCHS SOAR room is located in Room 6110 with Mr. Campbell.

📌 Frequently Asked Questions

How can we check college grades?
Students should check their grades regularly in Canvas to stay informed of their progress. We also recommend sitting down together once a week to review grades as a family.

🔹 Note: High school grades are not accurately reflected in Canvas. Please use PowerSchool to check high school grades.

What is a passing grade in college?
In most SJC courses, a 70% (a C) or higher is considered passing. It’s important for students to maintain at least a 70% throughout the semester to stay on track.

Can absences from college classes be excused?
Because San Juan College is a separate institution, high schools cannot excuse absences from college classes.

  • Make-up work for missed classes is at the college instructor's discretion.

  • Attendance often affects a student’s grade.
Students should review the course syllabus for absence policies and communicate with instructors in advance when possible.

When is the last day to drop a class?
Drop deadlines vary depending on the type of class (full-term, short-term, or late-start). If your student is considering dropping a course, please contact Ms. Calcote at calcotea@sanjuancollege.edu to find out the specific deadline and discuss next steps.

🔹 Note: A Withdrawal (‘W’) is better than a ‘D’ or ‘F’, as it won’t affect GPA. However, it does impact a student’s course completion rate, which can affect future financial aid or scholarship eligibility.
