During an emergency at a school, the district will share information as soon as possible. We'll tell you about what's happening, how the students and staff are, and where to find more information. You can check our website, social media pages, the city's websites, and social media, or the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management's sites. We might also use local news sites.

In the event of an Emergency Lockdown (a threat inside the school that necessitates our staff and students to take shelter), the school district might send information during the event. We'll tell parents that there's an emergency lockdown, ask them to avoid the area, and direct them to other places for more details. This is typically the district's website or the city's site. Later in the day, the district or city might send more detailed information. We'll explain what happened in more detail, depending on the information available, especially if there's an ongoing investigation.

For Preventative Lockdowns, any students outside are brought inside the school, and the outer doors are locked. After each student has been accounted for in their class spaces, students and staff resume normal operations inside the building. No one is allowed in or out until the lockdown is lifted. During these events, we might not send out any information. These lockdowns happen as a precaution and usually don't pose a threat. They're over quickly, and students might not even know they happened. The school, district, or city might provide information, but it might be limited because they weren't directly involved in the incident.

Occasionally, students and staff will need to evacuate from a school site because emergency services will not allow them to stay on site. In these situations, reunification will be conducted. 

With a reunification, students, and staff are transported from the school site to another facility that has been pre-selected. Once there, a reunification site is set up where students can be fed and sheltered, parents can park and pick up their child, and staff can verify the right child goes with the right guardian.

In these circumstances, the District will use the contact information provided by the parent or guardian.  Information may be passed through text or an automated phone call. Please do not call the school.  Remember, the school has been evacuated so there is no one there to answer the phone.

The District will also release information through other avenues such as social media, partner websites through the City of Farmington, or traditional radio and television media outlets. There will be multiple updates and messages, so check often.

These updates will start with what is going on, continue with updates on where students can be picked up, and have information on the process and what parents will need to bring with them. Please be patient. While the process may appear redundant at times, the District is committed to verifying at multiple stages that the right student is with the right adult. 

It is important to remember that reunification may occur for a variety of reasons. These may include a gas or water leak or criminal action on campus.  No matter the circumstances, the safety of the students and staff is the priority and, once that is assured, communication with parents and guardians will begin.

Notice of Right to Inspect Public Records

By law, under the Inspection of Public Records Act, every person has the right to inspect public records of the Farmington Municipal School District. Compliance with requests to inspect public records is an integral part of the routine duties of the officers and employees of the Farmington Municipal School District. 

Requests to inspect public records should be submitted to the public records custodian located at 3401 E. 30th Street, 505-324-9840 ext. 1546 or by emailing rtaboada@fms.k12.nm.us.

A person desiring to inspect public records may submit a request to the records custodian orally or in writing. However, the procedures and penalties prescribed by the Act apply only to written requests. A written request must contain the name, address, and telephone number of the person making the request. Written requests may be submitted in person or sent via US mail, email, or facsimile. The request must describe the records sought in sufficient detail to enable the records custodian to identify and locate the requested records.

The records custodian shall permit inspection immediately or as soon as practicable, but no later than fifteen (15) calendar days after the records custodian receives the inspection request. If inspection is not permitted within three business days, the person making the request will receive a written response explaining when the records will be available for inspection or when the public body will respond to the request. If any of the records sought are not available for public inspection, the person making the request is entitled to a written response from the records custodian explaining the reasons the inspection has been denied. The written denial shall be delivered or mailed within 15 calendar days after the records custodian receives the request for inspection.

Procedures for Requesting Copies and Fees

If a person requesting inspection would like a copy of a public record, a reasonable fee may be charged. The fee for printed documents 11 inches by 17 inches or smaller is $.50 per page. The fee for larger documents will be determined at the time of the request. There will be no fee for downloading copies of public records to a storage device if the requestor provides the device. If a person requests that a copy of a public record be transmitted or mailed, the requestor will be responsible for those costs. The records custodian may request that applicable fees for copying public records be paid in advance before the copies are made. A receipt indicating that the fees have been paid will be provided upon request to the person requesting the copies.

FMS students and staff, our communication channels are yours – help us get the word out across the district and to the greater community about the wonderful events happening at Farmington Municipal Schools and our communities. Our website and social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube) allow FMS to share videos, photos, upcoming events, and news quickly. Remember to help us promote our official channels. This, in turn, makes it easier for families to stay updated with the latest information as soon as we have it. The Public Relations Department has partnered with Canva, an online graphic design software that is the easiest way to create for creating graphics for social media, events, announcements, presentations, etc. Canva makes it super simple and easy to create content, edit videos, share special events with your audience, and collaborate with more than one person on a graphic at the same time. 

The good news? You’re already set up with an account at FMS. Using your district Google account, you can sign into Canva right now. Just go to canva.com, enter your district email address, and just under where you would enter your password, you should see “Log in with single sign-on (SSO)” populate. Click on that, and you will automatically be logged into the program. Note: There is no need to enter a password or create an account.
